Just One Question - My 5 top coaching questions

Coaching… it is so much more than questions, however they are the ingredients, the power, the spice, the key to unlocking those muddles, new ideas and positive directions ahead. Sometimes it is the most simple question at the right time that produces that spark or change of direction and sometimes it is those that make you stop, think and offer a whole new way of thinking.

In preparation for my forthcoming Group Coaching Course (starting 22nd February) I thought I would share my favourite 5 questions in a series of videos. These are (of course) my personal preference. Not every question is right for that situation and some questions might just not fit for you at all, but these are my ‘go to’s’ that I pull out the bag in sessions, workshops and also when just ‘self-coaching’ or reflecting myself.

Question 1: How would you love it to be?

Visualising the ideal scenario can be helpful to getting you where you want to go. They can help you with those big trophy goals, but also the small wins like getting through the day or having that conversation.

Question 2: What advice would you give to a friend right now?

I love this one.. it always brings such gentle answers, a softness to the conversation. It is like a HUGE ‘yes it is ok to be nice to myself’. The answers that fall out of people’s mouths after hearing it are so kind, so helpful, so needed - it is like it gives people the permission to say ‘oh actually it is ok to have a break’.

This question can give you the answers to what you truly need right now, the answers that have your best intentions at heart (no agenda, no judgement, no pressure, just you).

Question 3: What kind of?

This question is all about putting a magnify glass against what it is you want, honing in on the detail and the personal definition to you.

For example – many people talk about wanting more ‘Confidence’. We all know what that word is, but the meaning to each individual will be something completely different and focusing in can really help you to achieve it.  Here’s an example;

1.     Think of something you want (i.e – confidence)

2.     Ask yourself ‘What kind of ‘confidence’ is that ‘confidence’

3.     Then ask your self ‘Is there anything else about that confidence’.

*This is from ‘Clean Language’ method – one of the many methods I share on my Join The Dots Group coaching course.

Question 4: ‘What does your heart tell you?

Your heart can be the best tool to access your true purpose and passion – when we lead from the heart we are more joyful and motivated (whereas the head can speak from opinions, fears, should and ‘should nots’).

If you think this sounds abit fluffy, it is actually backed up by science. Our heart communicates to the brain and the body in many ways (nervous system, hormones and biomechanical info via blood pressure.Listening to your heart can bring out your true drivers and motivators. Ground you and help you make authentic decisions that connect to your values.

Question 5: What Else?

The final one is simple, but powerful. ‘What else?’ dropped at the right time can produce that magic solution, answer, that new idea or creative spark. If you think about it who really ever asks you ‘What else?’ when you have been talking or thinking out loud – it really makes you work!

I like to call it ‘Scraping the barrel’. When you have thought of all the possible solutions, all the ideas in your head have come out ‘What else?’ can bring out the one right at the bottom – the needle in the haystack. They say that sometimes in therapy or coaching where someone really wants to get to or that epiphany will come right at the last minute when their just about to leave.

So if it is thinking of a goal or listing your options right now – try the ‘What Else’ and see what is at the bottom of your barrel!
